Several weeks ago, Arizona Beverages, one of the largest beverage suppliers in the US and famous for their iced tea beverages, was under a massive malware attack that stopped their business for over a week and cost them millions of dollars a day in sales.
The crippling attack encrypted more than 200 servers and network computers. Backups failed. There is no known decryption tool for the malware. As a result, the company had to rebuild their entire IT system costing hundreds of thousands of dollars.
It turns out they were running old servers with outdated Windows operating systems that were no longer supported by Microsoft. Most of the servers had not received security patches in years.
This brings us to an important and related topic.
Microsoft has announced they are stopping support of Windows 2008 Servers as of January 14, 2020.
After January, these systems will be easier for hackers to attack as Microsoft will no longer release security patches to protect these systems.
While January seems to be a ways off, updating an IT infrastructure is a large task that takes considerable time and planning. It is important to know that due to the huge number of 2008 R2 servers and Windows 7 computers that are effected, the inventory of replacements will become more limited as the year progresses.
